Helpful Tools - Enders

two well used leaders and enders
December 2017
Some of the most helpful items I use for sewing are merely scraps of fabric that I use for leaders and enders. Using a leader helps to prevent a needle becoming unthreaded, it also helps to prevent a thread "bird's nest" on the bottom of a project. Personally, I also think it saves thread.

I know that some quilters prefer to sew on "Leader and Ender" projects instead of using a scrap like mine. I tried doing that, but got sidetracked and had to finish the project. I tend to switch-out my presser feet often, so using the scrap ender works best for me.

This photo shows a ender/leader being used, which allows chain-piecing. More information on these items can be found here and here.

If you sew, do you work on a Leader/Ender project or use a single header/ender scrap?

  1. I've never heard of these before, but makes sense. I remember my Mom would use tissue paper under the fabric when sewing with silk - easy to rip away when finished.

  2. I have never heard of this, either, and I don't get it. Do you have a false start and then sew onto the "real" project?

  3. I always use scrap leaders and enders. Occasionally I might use some triangles or postage stamp squares as my leader, but like you - those tend to distract me.

  4. Great post, Nancy. Thanks! I never really understood the concept before.

  5. Great tip, Nancy.
I use a leader and ender or what we call a 'threadle' as much as I can. I feel quite lost now when I don't have one. I believe it saves thread and also encourages snipping the thread close to what you are sewing rather than having lengths of thread hanging at the beginning and end of rows.
I have used leaders and enders for sewing basic scrappy blocks but can find having to think about another project whilst on the main one to be a bit distracting.

  6. I had never heard of this before either. What a great idea! Although I don't quilt much at all anymore, I will try to remember it for next time I do. Thank you.
    Blessings,

  7. I used to sew on those scrappy bits previously, but now I prefer to use real leaders and enders. It's great if you can organise yourself to have easy sewing from another project ready to use. That is how I sewed all the strips together on my Soul Searching blocks. It's just like bonus sewing!

  8. I just use a little scrap like you showed, all covered up with thread lines. I throw them away when they are really covered. Hugs,

  9. They are certainly great ways to keep from having the needle unthread! I use scraps, too!

  10. You know me Nancy, I dont sew. But I'd use those little scraps as cute mug coasters when they are done doing what you do with them!

  11. I use a leader and ender project, sometimes more than one

  12. I'm totally lost if I don't have a leader/ender project ready to go! Sometimes it's a planned project, and other times I'm just putting together 'twosies or foursies', and those end up in projects later.

  13. I use the same technique all the time. I call them "Threadles".

  14. I don't know why I haven't thought of this before--thank you so much for bringing it to my attention. I will definitely be using this technique in the future.
